24th
ALABAMA Infantry Regiment
Mustered in 15 Oct 61, Mobile, Ala. Surrendered 26 Apr 65.
Co APrivate Gabriel
OLSEN
B: ca. 1832 in Kristiansand, Norway. Enlisted at Mobile, Ala.,
in Co. C, 3rd Alabama Volunteer Militia on 4 Mar 62. Discharged
on 25 Mar 62 as unfit for duty. Again enrolled at Mobile 16
Aug 62 in Co. A, 24th Alabama Infantry. Formally enlisted at
Bardstown, Ky., 1 Oct 62 for the war. Straggled on the retreat
from Kentucky 9 Oct 62 and was captured by the Federals. Forwarded
to Gallatin, Tenn., from Camp Dick Robinson, Ky., 25 Oct 62.
Apparently exchanged shortly after 18 Nov 62. Absent sick in
General Hospital, Mobile, Ala., Dec 62 through Feb 63. Discharged
for disability 27 Feb 63 (Surgeon's Certificate). The regimental
officers apparently believed that he had deserted and caused
him to be dropped from the rolls of the 24th Alabama by General
Orders no. 13 (dated Tullahoma, Tenn., 28 Jan 63), although
medical records clearly show that he was at this time in hospital
in Mobile. Left Mobile for New Orleans in early March 64. Took
the oath of allegiance to the United States at New Orleans on
16 Mar 64 under the name of Gabriel Alston. Claimed exemption
from the Federal draft 28 Apr 65 by reason of having deserted
from the 24th Alabama on 4 March 64, obviously a false claim,
as he received a discharge from the C.S. army on 27 Feb 63.
Description: 5' 7" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, by
occupation a shoemaker.
