From Tysvœr, Norway. Came to the U.S.
in the early 1840s and volunteered in the war against Mexico.
He was with General Scott to Mexico City, later lived in
LaSalle county, Illinois, but went South again when the
Civil War broke out and fought on the Confederate side.
Died in Indiana.

B: in Norway ab. 1836. Enlisted as a substitute
with the 5th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment, U.S.V., 15
Aug 64. Deserted to the enemy (the Confederates) near Petersburg,
Virginia, 10 Oct 64.

Nicolai THOMPSON |
B: 29May 1839, Mandal, Norway. After a shipwreck
in the West Indies he was picked up by a blockade runner
and carried to Mobile, Alabama (obviously prior to August
1864, when Mobile was closed as a port). There he enlisted
in the Confederate army and served until the close of the
war. He then moved to Texas, where he lived in Falls, Dallas,
Parker, Jones, and finally Randal County. D: 30 Apr 1919,

letters, pension applications, family histories, Martin
Ulvestad's "Nordmœndene i Amerika", etc.
However, their names cannot be found on the muster rolls
of any unit from Texas (many rolls were never preserved). |

Christian CANUTESON |
B: in Norway. Canuteson applied for a Confederate
pension in 1914, but could not then remember his regiment,
as he was detailed during his entire service and understood
almost no English at the time. He claims to have enlisted
as a volunteer at Canton in 1862 and was detailed to serve
as an army shoemaker and saddlemaker until the surrender.
According to the application, he enlisted in the command
of a Captain Harrison, supposedly a mounted unit. This could
mean Captain J. S. Harrison, Co. F, Terry's Texas Cavalry,
or - if not a mounted unit - perhaps Captain James M. Harrison,
Co. I, 11th Texas Infantry; or Captain Robert P. Harrison,
Co. C, 13th Texas Infantry. Lieutenants by the name of Harrison
are also found in Co. M, 28th Texas Cavalry and Co. G, 17th
Texas Cavalry. It is difficult to determine the most likely
unit, because Canuteson's memory can hardly be trusted as
regards the officer's rank or branch of service. Confederate

Gjeruld GRIMLAND |
B: Gjeruld Kittelsen Grimeland 12 Oct 1844,
Åmli, Norway. "..Yern Grimland says he is..the oldest
of five brothers who enlisted and served as Confederate
soldiers.." - Confederate pension application of Ole
K. Grimland, p. 3 (Texas State Library). The other four
brothers were Yern (below), Gunsten (Co I, 11th Texas Infantry),
Neils (Co I, 11th Texas Infantry), and Ole (Co I, 11th Texas
Infantry). The fifth must have been Gjeruld, as he was by
far the only one of the remaining Grimland brothers (they
were 8 in all) who would have been eligible for military
service.

B: Halvor Christian Jensen Øvernes
19 Jul 1823, Holt, Norway. (Prev. pvt, Capt. H. F. Bridges'
Reserve Company, Henderson County, Precinct # 2, 13th Brigade,
TST.) Name appears on a consolidated report of conscripts
of the 5th Congressional District detailed to officers,
government agents, and state contractors. Holverson was
detailed to one state contractor Short, Briscoe county,
for furnishing arms. The report is not dated, but in view
of Holverson's age it was probably made after the 2d Conscription
